I started off wanting to write an article about Nollywood, and then this question came to mind

“What exactly is Nollywood?”

Hollywood is a neighborhood in the central region of Los Angeles, California. The neighborhood is notable for its place as the home of the U.S. film industry, including several of its historic studios. Its name has come to be a metonym for the motion picture industry of the United States.

Bollywood is a name for the Indian popular film industry, based in Mumbai (Bombay).

It became a simple case of Hollywood I know, Bollywood I know, Nollywood who are you?

The reason why this answer is difficult to answer is because “Nollywood” is not defined. It became apparent to me that a lot of the problems we have in the entertainment industry stem from lack of structure.

According to Wikipedia, Nollywood is a sobriquet that originally referred to the Nigerian film industry. The origin of the term “Nollywood” remains unclear; Jonathan Haynes traced the earliest usage of the word to a 2002 article by Matt Steinglass in The New York Times, where it was used to describe Nigerian cinema.

So does Nollywood refer to the movie industry, the entire entertainment industry or does it refer to the lifestyle of persons who participate in the Nigerian film or entertainment industry.

I ask these questions because I have heard the term used to represent the various classes mentioned at various times.

In my opinion, it appears that the intention on Nollywood is to replicate the American definition of Hollywood, which captures not only the business aspect of the entertainment industry but also the lifestyle.

Is having a section of Lagos state dedicated to Nollywood a welcome idea?

Maybe at some point in the future!

Right now, despite the obvious facts that entertainers in Nigeria do not get paid so much, the borrowed lifestyle of some of them makes that difficult to believe. The impact of this is that they will become targets of touts, thieves and armed robbers.

In conclusion, there are certain things that need to be in place before we can even begin to imagine Nollywood as Hollywood. However, it is important to state that I see great potential of this happening at some point in the future – maybe in the next 100years.
